Mary’s Comfort
2025 Annual Report

Mary’s Comfort remains committed to making the world a better place by supporting expecting and new mothers in need. We are an independent, volunteer-driven nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to serving women of all races and creeds.

Since opening our first home in 2024 we have provided shelter, guidance, and mentorship to six pregnant women.

We ended 2024 with the blessing of all of our moms having moved onto better situations. In late January/early February 2025 we welcomed two new moms who soon gave birth to 2 new babies. During those first months after the births our team assisted the moms in applying for available nutritional and other services; and covered essential expenses so that the moms could spend time with their babies.

Both moms were back at work by summer with the help of Fairfax County childcare subsidies. During the summer one mom left our care and was able to move into an apartment closer to her job. The other mom remains with us and has continued to work and improve her educational credentials with support from our budgeted education resources. And her baby is thriving.

In late summer and early fall our phone line received a number of exploratory calls from potential new guests. Our volunteers worked diligently through our vetting process and after several false starts we were excited to welcome another new mom in the fall. She is expecting in May 2026.

Our all-volunteer team ended the year with an extra task of helping one of our moms afford and recover from a necessary surgery. We are blessed to have had the financial resources and amazing group of volunteers to provide this help. Everyone is doing well now. Our volunteers put in overtime helping with child care and mom’s recovery and we are so thankful for everyone’s support.

As we move into 2026, we are starting to think about what may be next. Stay tuned for a 5 year plan coming soon.

We are grateful to every contributor who has helped make Mary’s Comfort a reality as a successful shelter and home to new life. Whether as a financial donor, volunteer or prayerful spiritual supporter, we appreciate you!

The Mary’s Comfort all-volunteer board, mentors and fundraisers are humbled and delighted to
share the news that we are welcoming new life into this world! Three new babies are happy, healthy and doing great! Read their Moms’ testimonials below.

On February 26, 2025, a beautiful baby girl came into this world. She weighed-in at a mighty 7lbs 14oz. Her mom, a Mary’s Comfort guest, recently shared some thoughts about what her time at Mary’s Comfort has meant to her. In her words:

"Before here I was depressed – crying every day and praying, asking God for help. I was asking myself, 'I am pregnant here and by myself – nobody to support me – is this a curse or a blessing?'

“Somebody talked to me about Mary’s Comfort… I was praying all night and it was so difficult… and this person said, “Oh, do you know Mary’s Comfort?” I say, “No.” She was like, “Okay, let me give you their phone number…”

“When I first came here I was so surprised because everybody just opened their hand to welcome me. Today I can call somewhere home. I’m still learning a lot. How people can love. They give love unconditionally here. And hope. And I’m so happy. Everyone is so nice to me and my baby. I’m just so happy to have a new beginning.

“I cannot ever thank you enough – not enough to express what I’m feeling. May God bless you."

Another Mary’s Comfort guest gave birth to a baby boy on February 20th, 2025, after escaping a very difficult situation. She had this to say about Mary’s Comfort:

“I don’t have words to say how much they have helped me. I was crying and crying the day they came for me. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I was lost. When we got here, they opened the door and I cried because I couldn’t believe it – how nice it was. I felt something like a spirit moving around me and it was God’s spirit to send these people to me.

“They made me feel like I’m their family. I can’t explain it. They really care about me. It’s not just about getting help, it’s about caring – having someone to talk to and share my faith with.

“They make sure we’re ready to be good moms. The mentors are like mothers to me. They push me and I love it. I want to do more and be more. They push me to go to school. They took me to sign up for classes. They truly care. They are here for me. I know that.

“Now I believe I can be more. They tell me, ‘You can make your way in life…’ and now I believe it! I’m so grateful. They opened the door for me. Nothing is impossible if you love and these mentors love.

“I would like to say thank you for everything. I’m so grateful. Thank you a million times. I cannot say thank you enough.”

One of the moms who stayed with us as a guest in 2024 is now enjoying time with her beautiful baby girl. She shared the following words of gratitude to Mary’s Comfort:

“It was during my stay at Mary’s comfort  that I gained the strength I needed to go on and carry my pregnancy out.

The place was a solace for me when I had  no safe space.

My child is now 10 months old:  a healthy and strong baby girl!

I  can’t thank you enough for the time I had there.

Welcome to our first Mary’s Comfort home in Springfield, Virginia.
Thanks to everyone who helped us achieve this milestone!

Mary's Comfort volunteers welcomed the Catholic Bishop of Arlington, Bishop Michael Burbidge, and clergy from several denominations, in August of 2024.

We celebrated the opening of a new home to bring hope and new opportunity to mothers in need.

Mary’s Comfort is the subject of an article
in the Arlington Catholic Herald entitled,
“A safe harbor in Springfield.”
